Is Grammarly Premium Worth It? The Full Review!

It is a fact that every writer makes mistakes, whether that be a spelling mistake, an incorrect tense, or a misplaced comma. And if we are honest, English has so many nuances that it doesn’t do writers any favors.

And so, the battle is on: Can a human editor do a better job than a digital writing tool? While the human editor wins the battle (in my humble and human opinion), there are good reasons to use a digital writing tool like Grammarly Premium.

But is the cost worth it? Let’s find out.

What Is Grammarly Premium?

Grammarly is a digital writing tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to show you spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors in written content. However, the tool goes further than that and offers you more… provided you foot the bill for these extras.

What are the benefits of signing up for a paid version of Grammarly with their Premium subscription versus the free version?

Benefits of Grammarly Premium Vs Free Grammarly

With the free version of Grammarly, you get real-time basic writing suggestions, and you get to decide whether you accept the suggestion or not. Grammarly points out errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar. At times, it may point out other mistakes in the document, without indicating where these are and it won’t tell you what is wrong or how to fix it.

The tool offers the same basic suggestions if you add their browser extension to Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer, or opt to use the add-ins for Microsoft Word and Outlook. There is also Google Doc support and native apps for Windows and macOS. This extends the AI checker to your other office tools.

You can also decide to use the Grammarly keyboard on your smart devices. When you’ve installed this keyboard on your smartphone, for example, Grammarly checks your content in Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, iMessage, and more. On Android, the Grammarly keyboard supports glide typing too! Pretty impressive, right?

With the free version, you also get a personal dictionary you can customize and a readability score, which tells you how logical and easy to read your content is. You can set Grammarly to check your content for U.K., U.S., Canadian, and Australian English.

At the end of the week, you get a Grammarly Performance Report emailed to you. This report shares key statistics such as how many words you wrote (or how many Grammarly checked for you), a text score that shares the quality of writing, a reliability score, and how your writing compares to that of other Grammarly users. Sounds like a lot, and this is all still free.

The Premium version of Grammarly, on the other hand, offers you even more.

The extra features (in addition to the more advanced spelling, grammar, and punctuation corrections and suggestions) are:

  • Consistency checks for spelling and punctuation
  • Checks for fluency in language usage
  • Conciseness checks
  • Sentence rewrite suggestions to improve clarity
  • Formatting
  • Suggestions to improve engagement with compelling vocabulary and lively sentence variety
  • Content delivery checks in the form of tone detection, how confident the writing “sounds,” politeness, the level of formality, and use of inclusive language
  • Plagiarism check
  • Advanced suggestions on third-party integration

In essence, the benefits of paying for Grammarly Premium are:

  • Just like the free version, Premium is just as easy to use. You get real-time suggestions and you can easily choose to accept or reject them. If you are not sure, you can check out the explanations to help you.
  • It teaches you about more than just writing with the correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar as it provides information about why something is wrong or why the tool made a certain suggestion. With time and as you learn, your writing will improve and you will make fewer mistakes.
  • You can personalize the type of feedback and suggestions Grammarly provides. To do this, adjust the settings for your content goals.

Your options here are as follows:

  • Intent > Choose whether your content informs, describes, convinces, or tells a story.
  • Your audience or readers > Are they general, knowledgeable, or experts?
  • Style > Should the content be formal, neutral, or informal?
  • Emotion/Tone > Should your writing be neutral, confident, joyful, optimistic, friendly, urgent, analytical, or respectful?
  • Domain > Are you writing for academic, business, general, technical, casual, or creative purposes?

Once you’ve adjusted these five goals, Grammarly will know which issues to flag and which ones to ignore, and better yet, the tool will give you some insights on whether your goals have been met or not, just like a writing partner.

  • While you can also use the free version with browser extensions and add-ins and so forth, you only get basic help with your writing. Premium offers you advanced writing suggestions across the board.
  • You get a plagiarism checker, which compares your content to billions and billions of web pages to see if it is a match or if you have indeed created original content.

 Grammarly Premium FAQs

Who needs Grammarly Premium?

You need Grammarly Premium if you write a lot and could use a “second pair of eyes” to rule out any basic and more advanced errors.

So, who can benefit from using the Premium version in comparison to free Grammarly? Bloggers, ghostwriters, authors, content creators, copywriters, freelance writers, business professionals, marketers, and college students can all use Grammarly to improve their writing.

How much does Grammarly Premium cost?

On an annual subscription, which offers the best value at a 61% discount, Grammarly Premium starts at $11.66 per month. If you prefer to pay monthly and will only use Grammarly for the short term, then it will cost you $29.95 per month, and if you opt to pay quarterly, the price is $19.98 per month.

Grammarly accepts payments made via credit card, debit card, and PayPal.

Can Grammarly Premium be shared?

Grammarly Premium is for one user; however, you can log into your Grammarly account from up to five devices. If you want to share Grammarly, then look at their Business plan which starts at $12.50 per team member per month on the annual subscription.

Can you cancel Grammarly Premium?

Yes, you can cancel your Grammarly subscription at any time. However, if you cancel it past the renewal date, you won’t be refunded. So, if you paid for the annual subscription on 1 March and canceled in October, you won’t get any money back, but you will have access until your subscription expires at the end of February.

Can Grammarly replace a human editor or proofreader?

In short, no, Grammarly—whether you use the free version or subscribe for Premium or Business—can’t replace a human editor or proofreader.

While most of the correction suggestions made by this digital writing tool are correct (estimated at 80% plus, but this depends on what you write), a real-life editor who knows much more about the nuances of language is still the best.

But that being said, Grammarly can help you improve your writing and assist in ruling out the most common errors.

The Final Verdict on Grammarly Premium

No matter how creative you are or how great your English language skills, we all need a little help, and that can’t always be in human form. Thus, we turn to AI-powered, paid writing tools to help us with our craft.

Grammarly’s Premium subscription is one such option; it definitely offers a lot more than the free version, which is OK provided you don’t write much or just need the basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation checks.

Here is a quick summary of what you get with free Grammarly versus Premium Grammarly:

More help is better at the end of the day, so the paid version of Grammarly should be an option for you if it fits within your budget.

However, caution should always be exercised. You can never blindly accept all the “correction” suggestions from any free or paid writing tool; as the saying goes, you should know the rules to know which ones you can break.

Grammarly’s suggestions are not 100% accurate, so where possible, have a human editor look over your content too.
